Why Adopt a Pet

When it comes to welcoming a new pet into your family, you have a choice – buying from breeders or general adverts, or adopting from a rescue and rehoming centre. At the RSPCA, we passionately advocate for adoption because it not only changes the life of the pet you bring home but also reflects your support for ethical animal welfare practices.

Adopting your next family pet is an incredibly rewarding experience. Perhaps the most important reason to adopt is that you’re saving an animal and giving it a second chance at life in a safe, loving home. Many of the pets that come to us have heartbreaking stories – some have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves, while others arrive because their owners can no longer cope or have grown too old to care for them. Some animals come to us after experiencing neglect or mistreatment. Despite their pasts, all these animals share one thing: they deserve a chance to find happiness again.

Choosing to adopt also means you’re actively helping to end harmful practices like puppy farming. By opting to rehome a rescue pet, you’re giving your support to the ethical treatment of animals. Adoption can also be the perfect choice for those who prefer older pets to puppies or kittens. Adult cats and dogs often have established temperaments and are past the energetic, time-intensive stages of early life, making them a great fit for many families.

When you adopt a pet, you’re not just bringing home a companion you’re making a difference. You’re giving an animal a new life, supporting animal welfare, and taking a stand against harmful practices. Why shop for a pet when you could give a rescue animal the love they’ve been waiting for?

How does rehoming work?

Rehoming is a journey that’s all about creating the perfect match between you and your future pet. Our goal is to ensure that both you and your new companion have a wonderful, fulfilling life together. From the first step of browsing available animals online to the exciting day you bring your newest family member home, we’re here to provide all the guidance and support you need.

Anyone can rehome a rescued animal from us – what matters most is finding the right match. Every pet is unique, and our partners work closely with potential adopters to ensure that the animal’s needs align with your lifestyle and preferences. Whether it’s a playful puppy, a laid-back cat, or a senior pet in need of a quiet home, we’re committed to helping you find the perfect companion.

Pre Adoption

When you adopt a pet from us, you can feel confident knowing they are ready to start a new chapter in a loving home. Every animal that comes into our care undergoes a thorough health check and receives any necessary vaccinations and treatments to ensure they’re fit and healthy before joining their new family.

All of our pets are microchipped, vaccinated, neutered, and treated for fleas and worms prior to rehoming. For some of our older animals, additional care may be required. For example, dogs and cats may need a dental exam and treatment before heading to their forever home. If a pet has ongoing needs, such as joint supplements for arthritis or specific dietary requirements, we’ll provide you with all the necessary information to ensure they receive the care they need.

Understanding Each Pet’s Unique Personality

We take the time to get to know each pet, learning about their unique personalities, preferences, and needs. This helps us match them with the right family and home. For example, some pets thrive as the only animal in the household, while others love having lots of company.

Certain dogs may not enjoy being left alone for extended periods and will require a family that can spend most of their time with them. Some cats, due to health or behavioral reasons, need to remain indoors and cannot go outside. By understanding each pet’s individual requirements, we ensure that they’re placed in an environment where they’ll be happy and comfortable.

A Perfect Match for You and Your Pet

The rehoming process is designed to create the best possible match between you and your new companion. We carefully consider your lifestyle, preferences, and the needs of the pet to ensure a successful, lifelong bond.

From their health to their personality, we make sure every detail is considered so you and your new pet can start your journey together on the right paw.

Our Partner

At our branch, many of the animals that come into our care, whether from local councils, the public, or our inspectors, are taken to the Danaher Animal Home. This trusted partner provides essential boarding, veterinary care and training to prepare these animals for their new lives.

Danaher Animal Home rehomes dogs and cats on behalf of our branch, as well as for other RSPCA branches and RSPCA HQ. If you’re looking to adopt, you can visit their website to see the animals currently available for adoption. The site is regularly updated with profiles of dogs, cats, and even small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters that are waiting for their forever homes.

Please note that visiting the Danaher Animal Home is by appointment only. This ensures that all animals receive the care and attention they need, while potential adopters have dedicated time to meet their future companions.

Our partnership with Danaher reflects our shared commitment to giving animals a second chance at happiness. By adopting from Danaher, you’re not only opening your heart and home to a pet in need but also supporting vital animal welfare work across the region.
