The El Camino Challenge fundraiser has proven to be an incredible success, with five dedicated local women surpassing expectations in both distance walked and funds raised for animal welfare in Essex.

Setting out to raise £1,111 for the RSPCA, the team – dubbed the “fab five” – had already surpassed their initial goal before even boarding their flight to Spain, raising an impressive £1,261. Motivated by this early support, they ambitiously upped their target to £1,999 as they prepared to tackle the 111km trek.

The team gained significant traction through social media and secured notable media coverage. The Colchester Gazette ran a feature on them prior to their departure, and Anna, one of the walkers, appeared live on BBC Radio Essex to share their mission.

While in Spain, Anna continued to engage supporters with daily updates, photos and videos posted on social media. These posts helped boost support as the group powered through the Camino. Though they planned to walk 111km, the team ultimately covered over 125km – some of it due to detours for scenic views and, at one point, an unexpected accommodation change that added five extra miles to their journey.

Despite facing a mix of challenges including tough terrain, chilly mornings, soaring midday temperatures, and intermittent rain, the group remained in high spirits. Ayla expressed their gratitude, saying, “We’re so chuffed we raised so much money for the RSPCA. They deserve every penny.” Anna added, “I genuinely can’t believe the generosity of people getting behind us. The support has been phenomenal.”

Helen reflected on the physical demands, noting, “I found it fine, but I probably would have done it over five days rather than four.” Rose emphasised the camaraderie and atmosphere: “It was exciting. There was a massive sense of community – especially feeling how integrated the walk is in the local towns.” Ayla described the scenery as “lush,” while Rose highlighted “quiet sunrises, beautiful wildlife, moss, trees and birdsong.”

Upon completing the challenge, Aleks summed it up perfectly: “It is a great achievement. It makes the blisters, aching joints and sweaty backs worth it, knowing the money will go to giving dogs and cats of Essex a better life.”

We’re incredibly proud of these wonderful women. At the time of writing, the team’s GoFundMe page has reached £1,716, with an additional £120 collected in cash during their trip – putting them tantalisingly close to their £1,999 goal. Donations are still welcome via their GoFundMe link: https://gofund.me/d5badbf7.

These five incredible women have not only walked the distance but also inspired a community. Let’s help them cross that final fundraising milestone!
