This October, the young members and leaders of the Clacton Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) are taking on an extraordinary endurance challenge to support vulnerable animals across Essex.

Together, the group has set an ambitious target to walk 10 million steps—the equivalent of roughly 4,500 miles—throughout the 31 days of October to raise vital funds for the RSPCA Essex Mid & North Branch

To reach their £999 fundraising goal, the cadets and leaders will need to cover a combined total of around 145 miles every single day, with each participant clocking over 8 miles daily. The money raised will go directly toward providing food, shelter, and essential veterinary care for rescued local animals in need.

The inspiration for the challenge came after a recent visit to the cadet unit by Derrick Yapp, Income Generation Manager at RSPCA Essex Mid & North. Inspired by the branch’s local rescue work, the cadets enthusiastically pledged their support

David Dhaine, Staff Leader at Clacton Volunteer Police Cadets, said:

“Our cadets are always keen to make a positive impact in the local community, and when we heard about the fantastic work being done by the local RSPCA branch, we knew we wanted to get involved. Walking 10 million steps in a single month is going to test everyone’s stamina but knowing that every step helps local animals will keep us marching forward!”

Derrick Yapp, Income Generation Manager at RSPCA Essex Mid & North Branch, added:

“We are overwhelmingly grateful to David and all the brilliant cadets at Clacton VPC for taking on such a huge challenge for us. As an independent local charity, we rely entirely on the generosity and initiative of our local community. A distance of 4,500 miles is no small feat, and we’ll be cheering them on every step of the way!”
